RSS ‘ghosh’ camp to end with performances today

Special Correspondent

The programme will be held at the Jayanagar stadium

A similar camp was held in Bangalore in 1973

BANGALORE: The valedictory function of the three-day ‘ghosh’ (traditional martial music band) camp of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh’s southern regional unit of Karnataka will be held at the Jayanagar stadium on Tuesday.

Announcing this at a press conference here on Monday, RSS Karnataka southern regional general secretary Prabhakar Bhat said it would be a musical event in which more than 3,000 instrumentalists would participate.

The public function will be addressed by RSS national chief K.S. Sudarshan.

Dr. Prabhakar said the RSS ‘ghosh’ had replaced the English names of instruments with Indian ones. Citing examples, he said the word ‘band’ had been replaced with ‘ghosh’. Similarly, the side drum had been rechristened as ‘anaka’, the bass drum as ‘panava’, the bugle as ‘shanka’, the flute as ‘vamshi’ and the triangle as ‘thribhuja’.

A similar camp was held in Bangalore in 1973, and 375 instrumentalists took part in it, he recalled.

Instrumentalists from Bangalore, Mysore, Mangalore, Tumkur and Shimoga districts would participate in the camp. Karnataka had more than 5,000 ‘ghosh’ instrumentalists, he said.

The instrumentalists will also take out two simultaneous marches from Rani Saraladevi School and MES playground (in front of the Jayanagar telephone exchange) in Jayanagar from 3.15 p.m. on Tuesday. The marches will culminate at the Kittur Rani Chennamma Stadium (Jayanagar stadium).

RSS regional president M. Venkataramu was present.
