Kochi: The Kerala High Court on Monday directed the Superintendent of Police, Kottayam to provide adequate police protection to the 12 UDF members of the Kottayam district panchayat to participate in the election of new panchayat president. The vacation Bench comprising Justice P.R. Raman and Justice Harul-Al-Rashid issued the directive on a petition filed by former district panchayat president Thomas Kunnappally and other UDF members of the panchayat. The election to the post of the president was scheduled on January 2. The petitioners feared that CITU workers would disrupt the elections and prevent them from exercising their votes. Elephant menaceThe court has directed Palakkad District Collector to see that adequate measures are taken by the Chief Conservator of Forests and Divisional Forest Officer, Mannarkad, to ward off wild elephants, if necessary by providing lighting systems in the Sholayur panchayat area during Christmas celebrations.
