29 others and an institution also chosen for annual honour

Bangalore: The Karnataka Janapada and Yakshagana Academy has selected the Gulbarga-based D.B. Naik and the Sagar-based G.S. Bhat for its prestigious awards for 2007 named after noted folk scholars B.S. Gaddimath and G. Shampa.

It has also selected 29 persons and an institution, the Kasaragod-based Bharati Kalasadan, for its annual awards.

The academy has selected “Samajo Janapada” and “Kannada Janapada Kala Pravesha” by the Gulbarga-based H.T. Pothe and the Bangalore-based Chakkere Shivashankar respectively for the book awards for 2006.

Announcing the awards, chairman of the academy Keremane Shambhu Hegde told presspersons here on Monday that they would be presented in the first week of February in Bangalore.

The silver jubilee of the academy would be held in the second week of February 2008, he added.

On the reported government move to create a separate Yakshagana academy, Mr. Hegde said it might be a reality by April 2008. He would welcome such a move as Yakshagana had its own identity and different forms.

While the awards carry a cash prize of Rs. 10,000, the book and annual awards carry a purse of Rs. 5,000. The annual award winners are: M.R. Ranganatha Rao (Sutrada Salaki Gombeyata, Bangalore); Muniyamma (Sobanepada, Bangalore Rural); Kadraiah (Patakunitha, Ramanagara); R. Srinivas (Tamate Vadana, Kolar); K.E. Palangappa (Bolkat, Kodagu); Jayanthkumar Tonse (Yakshagana Bhagavata, Udupi); Ninge Gowda (Garudi Gombe, Mandya); Babu Parava (Bhootaradhane, Dakshina Kannada); Basavantha Maruthi Bhajantri (Tase Vadana, Bagalkot); Mallashetty Udageere (native medicine, Bidar); Beerappa Huchhappa Gotoori (Dollina Haadu, Belgaum); Lalavva Lamani (Lambani dance, Dharwad); Shekharappa Badigera (Maddale player, Bellary); Lankeppa Bhajantri (Khani Vadana, Raichur); K. Thimmappa (Sanadi Vadana, Chikmagalur); Siddi Goravaiah (Goravara Kunitha, Tumkur); Eramma (Kasuti, Bijapur); Maheshwara Gowda H. Lingadahalli (Puravantike, Haveri); Malali Eramma (Sobane Haadu, Chitradurga); M. Mahadevaiah (Kombu Kahale, Chamarajanagar); Takappa (Dollu Kunita, Shimoga); Siddaramaiah (Pooja Kunita, Mysore); Narayana Mahabaleshwara Bhatta (Yakshagana, Uttara Kannada); Pundalika Pujari (Dollina Kaipattu, Gulbarga); Kumaraiah (Chit Mela, Hassan); Sharanappa Vadigera (folk singing, Koppal); Munivenkatappa (Halage Vadana, Chickballapur); H. Basappa (Chammala Vadya, Davangere); and Maruteppa Balavanteppa Bhajantri (Karadimajalu, Gadag).
