KOCHI: The export of coir products from the country for the eight months from April 2007 witnessed a 20.47 per cent increase in terms of volume. The exports came to 118,158 tonnes. An official press release issued by the Coir Board said the export up to November 2007 was higher only by 2.5 per cent in Rupee terms compared to April-November 2006. The value-wise export came to Rs.387.11 crore. It appears that 12.5 per cent appreciation in rupee against the US dollars has impacted coir exports, the release said. Even though there were many hurdles that affected the export of coir and coir products, the figures showed a commendable volume growth. During the same period last year, it was 98,079 tonnes at Rs.377.65 crore. Coir Board Chairman A.C. Jose said the value realisation would have gone up by another Rs.68.27 crore if rupee appreciation had not dented coir exports. The release said coir and its products are exported to more than 97 countries. The US is the single largest market with a share of more than 40 per cent. European countries together share more than 41 per cent of the export of coir. About 19 per cent of the remaining export is shared by a number of countries. UK, Germany, The Netherlands, Italy, Belgium, Australia, France, Spain, Canada, Japan, Greece, Sweden, South Africa, UAE, Portugal and Denmark are the major markets of coir and coir products. Coir is exported in the form of raw materials like coir fibre, yarn, door mats, mattings, rugs, carpets, coir rope and rubberised coir and its products, pith-based products for agricultural operations and soil erosion control materials. Coir Board has participated in various international trade fairs and exhibitions and displayed its range of products available for export from India. During this year, the Board would be participating in more international trade fairs and exhibitions in traditional as well as potential regions. The release said the Export Market Development Assistance Scheme of the Board has been modified to encourage more and more small-scale exporters with an export turnover of less than Rs.2 crore to undertake promotional measures like participation in exhibition, study tours and buyer-seller meets. Coir Board would organise participation in international fairs as well as buyer- seller meets to expose small-scale exporters to international competition. They will be provided air fare and stall rent subject to a maximum of Rs.1.25 lakh.
