Cole nets Chelsea’s winner

LONDON: Joe Cole fired Chelsea to a 1-0 victory at Blackburn and Newcastle United’s Mark Viduka scored a second equaliser three minutes from the end to make sure the Magpies avoided a major upset, drawing 2-2 at home with last-place Derby County in the Premier League on Sunday.

Cole scored Chelsea’s winner in the 22nd minute on a fast, two-pass counterattack at Ewood Park, where Blackburn goalkeeper Brad Friedel twice denied Frank Lampard with top quality diving saves.

Chelsea is third with 37 points, still six behind Arsenal.

Newcastle climbed two spots to ninth. Derby now has seven points.

The results: Chelsea 1 (Joe Cole 22) bt Blackburn Rovers 0; Newcastle United 2 (Mark Viduka 27, 87) drew with Derby County 2 (Giles Barnes 6, Kenny Miller 52). — Agencies
