Mammoth Effort: The sculpture of Jesus Christ, carved by sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik, on the eve of Christmas festival, at the Puri beach on Monday.— BHUBANESWAR: When Christmas is round the corner, can the renowned sand sculptor Sudarshan Patnaik remain silent? Obviously not for this young but versatile artiste who is inspired to sculpt something big or unusual as and when something happens . So Sudarshan has come up with world’s biggest sand Jesus this time at the Puri beach. Assisted by 15 of his students at the Golden Sand Art Institute, the master sculptor has put up an eight-day sand art festival on the shore of the Bay of Bengal celebrating the spirit of the Christmas. Jesus is also seen here along with the Mother Mary and the colourful Santa Clause. The 22-feet high sculpture has consumed 600 tones of sand and took 25 hours to be complete, said Sudarshan who has used coloured sand to create the image of Santa and Mother Mary holding baby Jesus. In the scene, Santa is shown sitting in front of the God and wishing people a merry Christmas. The sand art festival is drawing huge crowds, both domestic and foreigners. “I expect my work to be included in the Limca Book of World Record ,” disclosed Sudarshan.
