UP IN SMOKE: The fire that broke out on General Patters Road in Chennai on Monday. CHENNAI: A fire broke out in a multi-storeyed automobile spare parts showroom on General Patters Road here on Monday. The staff employed in the showroom managed to escape unhurt. On information at around 11 a.m., fire and rescue services personnel rushed to the spot with 10 fire tenders and as many Metrowater tankers. The cause of the fire at the private building was not known immediately. Many spare parts for two-wheelers and four-wheelers and helmets meant for sale were destroyed. Despite the road being one-way, fire personnel found it difficult to reach the spot as a major part of the road was used for parking private vehicles. Traffic policemen were unable to regulate the violators. When the water tankers could not enter the road, the police towed away the four-wheelers and two-wheelers from the spot. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Triplicane) M. Ramasubramani and a posse of police arrived at the scene and diverted the traffic. The Triplicane police are investigating. Traffic on the arterial Anna Salai came to a standstill for an hour. Divisional Fire Officers V. Vijaykumar and Meenakshi Vijaykumar and team supervised the operations, which lasted over three hours.
