Andhra Pradesh
The grand inauguration of TMC showroom in the city had people on MG Road pausing to catch a glimpse of film actress Bhoomika who graced the occasion. Her arrival, though behind schedule, more than made up for the delay when the actress cheerfully waved at her fans and flashed that infectious smile. Her husband Bharat Thakur dutifully followed her wherever she went. At the meeting that followed, actor Akkineni Nageswara Rao entertained the audience with his fine sense of humour. Realising that by mistake he had addressed Bhoomika as ‘Miss.’, he corrected himself: “I am sorry, she is now ‘Mrs.’. But doesn’t matter, since film actresses always remain a ‘Miss’ for their fans. Moreover, her husband cannot understand what I am talking,” he said pointing to Bharat who looked blankly at him. Driving home the pointA farmers’ leader has recently observed that there is a growing restlessness in rural areas in view of growing unemployment and lack of good prices for agricultural produce. Reflecting this concern were the comments made by a small farmer who came to witness the State-level Rural Games held at Indira Gandhi Municipal Stadium here. As some leaders, who gathered there, were discussing the need for increasing the price of sugarcane, the farmer seated in a chair nearby interrupted them to drive home his point. He pointed out that a ruling party MLA has recently demanded better price for sugarcane instead of making sincere efforts in that direction. The farmer has felt that concerted efforts are needed on the price issue, rather than mere lip service. ‘Thorny’ chairJoint Collector S. Suresh Kumar was in for shock when he saw the huge red, throne-like chair that was put on the dais by organisers of a meeting. Though he was the chief guest, Mr. Suresh Kumar was among the first to arrive at the venue. He waited for the rest of the guests to come sitting on an ordinary PVC chair in the front row. When he was called to take his seat on the dais finally he asked the organisers to remove the throne-like chair without any hesitation. Mr. Suresh Kumar who was modest enough to have the chair changed could not escape the exaggerated praises heaped on him. Shocked!Minister for Civil Supplies Kasu Venkata Krishna Reddy got shock of his life on Sunday when he tried his hand at quizzing during a live programme over local TV network in Narsaraopet. Students of Class X recognised Rajiv Gandhi as Chief Minister for Andhra Pradesh!! But the shock did not end there! Former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh Damodaram Sanjeevaiah was recognized as father of TDP leader Kodela Siva Prasada Rao. Students surprisingly never heard of Morarji Desai, Zakir Hussain or Lal Bahadur Shastri. It was heartening that 100-odd students could identify Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru, but the worst was identifying V.V. Giri as a well-known teacher. (P. Sujatha Varma, G. Ravikiran and G.V. Ramana Rao in Vijayawada and Ramesh Susarla in Guntur)
