‘Bahuroopi’ to be a low-key affair this year

Staff Correspondent

MYSORE: The “Bahuroopi” national theatre festival on the theme “tribal culture” will be organised by Rangayana-theatre repertory in January. But it will be a low key affair this time owing to the delay by the Department of Kannada and Culture in releasing the funds for organising the festival, according to director of Rangayana Chidambara Rao Jambe. Rangayana, according to Mr. Jambe, has commenced its preparations to hold the festival on a grand scale from August.

A Rs.35-lakh proposal was sent to the Government in this regard. Earlier, the Government had sanctioned Rs. 20 lakh for conducting the “Bahuroopi”. As initially it was planned to conduct the festival both in Mysore and Dharwad from January 12 to 18, more funds were sought to organise the festival this year.

But, the festival would now be conducted only for four days owing to the delay in releasing the funds, Mr. Jambe said. With the imposition of the President’s Rule in the State, another proposal was sent to the Governor in November urging him to release the funds at the earliest for holding the festival as plannedMeanwhile, the Department of Finance returned the file to the Department of Kannada and Culture asking the director to make use of the unused funds for the festival.

The festival would now be held from January 14 to 17.
