TIRUCHI: The Consumer Club of Jamal Mohammed College has taken up a novel initiative of creating awareness on consumer rights among the masses by starting a ‘mobile consumer library.’

To start with, the library has stocked over 100 books on consumer rights, remedial measures in case of unfair trade practices or mental agony and similar allied topics. Club members will visit a village and distribute the books to residents and collect them after a few weeks.

Inaugurating the library at a function, organised jointly by the NSS unit and the college club, besides the Department of Food Supply and Consumer Protection here on Monday, District Supply Officer M. Lakshmikanthan underlined the need to create awareness among the masses. He listed out laws governing the rights of consumers and advised the members to explain them to the villagers.

In his presidential address, Principal M. Sheik Mohammed said both the State and the Centre had implemented consumer welfare schemes with adequate funds. He appealed to the club members to explain the schemes to the masses for proper utilisation.

The distribution of books will begin at Poonampalayam near Mannachanallur next month.

Consumer activists S. Pushpavanam, V. Maheswaran and Sakuntala Srinivasan were among those who spoke. They explained the provisions of consumer-related laws and the district, State and national level organisations to protect consumer rights.
