MUMBAI: Farmers protesting against the Reliance Group’s Mumbai Special Economic Zone (MSEZ) in Raigad are demanding that the State government issue a notification removing 22 villages in Pen taluk from the project. These villages lie in the command area of the Hetawane dam and the Irrigation Department had agreed that they cannot be acquired for the MSEZ. It had also issued a letter to the District Collector in this regard. The MSEZ is proposed in 45 villages in three taluks of Raigad district, spread over 10,000 hectares. “Violation of law”Rajan Zemse of the Action Committee against the SEZ said that in Raigad, the acquisition process for the MSEZ was on despite protests and in violation of the law. Apart from the Raigad farmers, a small group on Monday staged a protest demonstration. The government has said that it was committed to removing the 22 villages from the MSEZ and would take action soon in this regard. It has also agreed to meet soon the farmers affected by SEZs all over the State.
