Delhi churches at their best to usher in Christmas

Festive look: Sacred Heart Cathedral is fully decked up on the eve of Christmas in New Delhi on Monday.
NEW DELHI: The sound of bells and Christmas carols reverberated through the December air on Monday as churches in the Capital geared up to usher in Christmas.
Members of Sacred Heart Cathedral at Gole Dak Khana celebrated Christmas Eve by singing Christmas carols including the perennial favourite “Silent Night” and other popular ones like “Rudolph, The Red Nose Reindeer” and “Drummer Boy” among others. This was followed by midnight mass.
English and Hindi
While most Christmas carols are sung in English and Hindi in groups of five to 25, some are sung in regional languages.
Said Benjamin D’Souza: “The peculiarity of Christmas lies in the fact that it is celebrated by many non-Christians as well. There are many people belonging to other religions who also come to attend the midnight mass. Even if they don’t participate in the carol singing, they just sit around and listen to the sessions.”
“Tuesday is the day of festivities where we will exchange Christmas cakes and organise a family lunch. The special delicacies prepared for Christmas differs from region to region,” he added.
