Limited choice for recreation

Every holiday is a reminder of how limited opportunities for recreation in Kozhikode are. To find out, just try to drive anywhere near the beach on a holiday. You will struggle just to reach the beach, after getting past all the blocks on the road, only to find that it is too crowded.

The beach, in the absence of better options, is the favourite place in the city for families to spend the evening on a holiday. Well, there is also the Mananchira Square, which can, of course, accommodate far fewer people.

And if you thought you could spend the evening watching some cultural programme, you could as well settle in front of your television at home. Rarely does the city play host to quality music or dance programmes these days.

About the only regular cultural event that brings respected artistes to the city is the Malabar Mahotsav. Even that was a big letdown this year, as it was clubbed with the Malabar Shopping Festival and failed to feature any top-notch singer or dancer.
