L. Srikrishna

CHENNAI: Next time you travel in a train and require assistance from the police, dial 9962 500 500. This new facility was launched in the city on Monday.

State Director General of Police P. Rajendran, Southern Railway General Manager Rakesh Chopra, and Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) K.Vijay Kumar, Commissioner of Police G.Nanchil Kumaran and Vodafone senior vice-president (Sales) S.Murali presented 150 mobile handsets to the railway police personnel at a function held in the Central Railway Station.

On receipt of a call from the travelling public, personnel at the Railway Police Control Room would ascertain the details and in turn, convey the message to the escort policemen travelling in the particular train, who would reach to the seat/berth of the passenger’s compartment and take action. In case the escort personnel is absent in the train, the control room would alert the next approaching railway police station.

Later, Inspector General of Police (Railways) Sanjay Arora told The Hindu that in addition to the existing services offered to rail passengers across Tamil Nadu, the new facility would be initially introduced in 68 long-distance trains in the State and 79 EMU services from Beach to Tambaram stations and 66 EMU services from Chennai Central to Pattabiram.
