A grand first for medical college alumni

They let their hair down – or maybe one should say, stethoscopes down – last Saturday when the oldest medical college in the State, with the youngest alumni association, organised a banquet and cultural programme in honour of its former students.

The Trivandrum Medical College is 56 years old. Yet it was only last year that its former students got together to formally declare themselves an association. But better late than never, the hundreds of alumni who had gathered at the Golf Club grounds from across the world for the first grand convention of the alumni association, seemed to say.

Doctors right from the first batch of MBBS (1951) were there, including nearly 150 of them from the U.K., the U.S., Europe and the UAE who had come just for the convention. Many of them expressed happiness to put in their bit – logistically and financially – to develop their alma mater.

There was nostalgia in the air as batchmates reminisced about their campus life and their venerable teachers of yesteryear.

Actor Mohanlal, who put in an appearance, brought a dash of colour and excitement to the occasion. Congratulating the alumni, he said that as an actor, he had had occasions to live the lives of doctors and go through their experiences and found it no easy task.

A cultural programme was also organised.
