Graphic: One of the pictures in the calendar. Bangalore: What could be unusual about calendars with women on them, considering that they have always been the pet theme for calendar makers, sometimes as goddesses and sometimes as models in swimsuits? The calendar for the coming year brought out by Janavadi Malila Sanghatane again puts women in focus, but with a perspective that overturns the stereotypes on women. It shows women struggling to make a living even as they nurture those around them. The 12 striking black-and-white pictures are accompanied by extracts from various laws related to women. K.S. Vimala of the Sanghatane says that the idea of the calendar stemmed from a photo competition organised to mark the silver jubilee celebration of the organisation. They chose the 12 out of the 280 entries for the calendar. “Calendar is also a form of art that can be used as a tool of campaign, on the lines of wall writing or painting,” says Ms. Vimala. What is striking about the pictures, she says, is that all the women exude self-confidence even as they are struggling for survival. “They are not craving for pity,” she adds. LaunchThe calendar will be formally launched on December 31 and for copies of the calendar Janavadi Mahila Sanghatane can be contacted on 9448072431 or 94801014681.
