Kendrapara: A high-level inquiry into the alleged laundering of rural works development division’s flood damage restoration grants commenced today. An estimated Rs. 10 crores central grants sanctioned by the Special Relief Commissioner in the aftermath of September 2006 flood had allegedly been siphoned off by the departmental agencies. A team of technical experts led by the engineer-in-chief of rural works development wing made spot inquiry of several projects executed as part of flood damage restoration programme. The grants mostly meant for road repair were largely embezzled. Besides, the quality of works was heavily compromised. Funds were also reportedly spent for division office staff quarters though there was no physical existence of staff quarters. - PTI
