928 village habitations, 18 town panchayats and two municipalities to benefit Government is giving priority to water supply schemes, says Minister ATTUR: The Comprehensive Drinking Water Supply Scheme for Attur, Gengavalli and other nearby habitations is expected to be completed in 18 months. The Rs. 141-crore scheme will ensure adequate and uninterrupted supply of Cauvery water to the people of Attur, Gengavalli, Vazhapadi and Panamarathupatti blocks. The scheme will benefit 928 village habitations, 18 town panchayats and two municipalities. Till today, these areas are inadequately served from the Salem-Attur Water Supply Scheme with Salem city enjoying the lion’s share in the distribution. PopulationAs the city’s population is expected to touch a staggering 10 lakh shortly, the need for a dedicated water scheme for the city has been felt. Once the Salem water supply scheme is completed, other towns such as Attur and Gengavalli will be getting adequate supply of Cauvery water from the existing scheme. This move will ensure the panchayats to function without any interruption. Development worksDevelopments were taking place in almost all fronts in the State, he said and added that people should utilise these opportunities fully. Collector N. Mathivanan; K. Rani, MP; M. R. Sundaram, R. Rajendran, and K. Chinnadurai, MLAs; district panchayat council chairman Shanmugam; PO, DRDA, Jegannathan; RDO Baskara Pandian; among others participated at the function.
