Work on health sub centre begins at Karungalpatti

Health conscious: Construction of buildings in progress for the centre at Karungalpatti in Salem. –

SALEM: The construction of new buildings for the Salem Corporation’s health sub centre at Karungalpatti has begun here recently.

The work is being carried out at an estimated cost of Rs. 24.5 lakh under the civic body’s comprehensive plan to revamp its urban health posts, maternity and child health centres, sub centres, dispensaries and other health facilities.

The new buildings will have labour room, out-patient room, drug store, patients waiting hall and residential quarters for health personnel.

The centre caters to a population of about 15,000.

Besides maternity care, childcare and immunisation programmes are also being carried out in the area from the centre.

A large number of people visit the centre, as treatment at private clinics costs them dear.

The existing building of the centre has only one hall and it lacks equipment to deliver proper service to the residents.

Corporation officials said that they would equip the centre with modern facilities after completing the construction of new buildings.

Officials further said that the health centres in other parts, which did not witness any significant improvement even after several years since the Salem city was given the Corporation status, would be upgraded under the plan shortly.

The civic administration would provide new equipment and furniture to all the health centres and Urban Health Posts.
