Elephant in musth left in sun

SPCA attempts to take up the case

KOCHI: An elephant, suspected to be in musth, was made to stand in the sun for days together.

This happened even after the district wing of the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) tried to take up the case.

The case of the animal was brought to the notice of M.R. Sethumadhavan, secretary, Ernakulam SPCA, on Monday.

The animal was chained at a saw mill at Alinchuvadu along the Perumbavoor-Puthencruz Road.

“The animal was visibly distressed. It was trying to cover itself using coconut fronds given to eat. Those at the mill cautioned us from going near it,” said Mr. Sethumadhavan.

He said he immediately alerted the Malayatoor Divisional Forest Officer and, later, filed a complaint in writing. The complaint said that it was suspected that the elephant had no ownership certificate.

When contacted, Sudhir, Malayatoor DFO, said that no such complaint had been brought to his notice.

“We have been receiving complaints of elephants raiding crops at Kalady for the last couple of days. The case of the elephant will be looked into once a complaint is received,” he said.
