Most number of accidents in Ernakulam Accident rate high on National Highways Thiruvananthapuram: As many as 2,831 persons were killed and 38,539 injured in 32,593 road accidents in Kerala during the first 10 months of the year. Accident statistics for the period January-October revealed that the most number of road accidents in the State occurred between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. During this period, 272 persons were killed and 4,185 injured in 3,614 road accidents. The 7 p.m.-8 p.m. period witnessed the second-highest number of 2,411 accidents. As per the statistics, the 12 midnight-1 a.m. stretch witnessed the least number of accidents. The National Highway stretches passing through the State have become ‘killing fields’ with the highest number of road accidents occurring on NH 47 and NH 17. In 8,963 road accidents that occurred on the NH stretches till October 31 this year, 1,063 persons were killed and 10,907 persons were injured. The State highways witnessed 5,150 accidents. As many as 534 persons were killed and 6,501 were injured on the State highways. On other road stretches, 18,480 road accidents were reported during the period. In these accidents, 1,234 were killed and 21,131 injured. Fault of drivers resulted in 2,787 deaths and injuries to 38,145 persons in 32,221 accidents. The error committed by other drivers resulted in 188 accidents in which 20 persons were killed. Fault committed by bicycle riders resulted in three accidents. Ernakulam tops the districts in the number of accidents and deaths with 403 killed in 5,475 accidents. In Thiruvananthapuram, 326 were killed in 3,924 road accidents, Thrissur (3,642 accidents; 314 deaths) and 243 were killed in 2,742 accidents in Kozhikode. The least number of 40 deaths was reported from Wayanad. Two-wheelers accounted for the maximum number of vehicles involved in accidents. As many as 639 persons were killed and 11,162 injured in 10,727 road accidents involving two-wheelers. Two-wheelers accounted for one-third of the road accidents. Cars, jeeps and taxies were involved in 7,096 accidents in which 535 persons were killed. Three-wheelers were involved in 4,604 accidents that claimed the lives of 184 persons. Trucks and lorries were involved in 2,263 road accidents that resulted in 386 deaths. The State-owned KSRTC buses were involved in 784 road accidents. As many as 156 persons were killed in accidents involving KSRTC fleet. Private buses were involved in 4,542 road accidents that led to the death of 534 persons. Carelessness led to 32,221 accidents and Ernakulam, Thiruvananthapuram, Thrissur and Alappuzha districts were in the forefront. While 24,332 accidents occurred during daytime, 8,261 accidents were reported during night.
