NREGS: works costing Rs. 365 crore sanctioned

Kakinada: The district administration obtained administrative clearance for works costing Rs 365 crores under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) and prepared a computerised database of the estimates pertaining to works worth Rs 266 crore. The mandal development officers have been ordered to send the labour budgets immediately.

District Collector M Subrahmanyam stated in a press release that East Godavari district stood first in implementing the NREGS and called for efforts to retain the lead. The collector instructed the officials to take steps for repairing irrigation tanks under Indiramma scheme and give priority to minor tanks which cater to the maximum acreage of crops, in order to augment the irrigation facility. The Collector also stated that an action plan to grow horticultural crops on 35,000 acres 2008-09 under the NREGS was drafted and necessary steps were being taken to achieve the goal. Cultivation of horticultural crops was taken up only in 6,500 acres under NREGS in the current financial year, he added.
