dated December 26, 1957: A performing animal

Prime Minister Nehru on December 24 looked an extremely tired man as he was rushed through from meeting to meeting ever since his arrival in Calcutta earlier in the morning. Mr. Nehru, addressing students at the Jadavpur University, told them that it seemed to him that he was like a performing animal being taken from function to function. Mr. Nehru hastily added that while he did not mind it, it was obvious that it was difficult to speak something worthwhile at every place. He then went on to give students a thought-provoking address about their place in future society. Soon after his arrival, Mr. Nehru visited a glider factory and addressed the All-India Writers’ Conference. After a hurried lunch he met the Chief Minister, Dr. B.C. Roy and then motored to Batanagar where he addressed a labour rally. Later he rushed to Jadavpur to attend the Convocation of the University where he reached a few minutes late, after the Convocation was declared closed by the Rector.
