dated December 26, 1957: Learning of Hindi

Mr. Morarji Desai, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, on December 24, pleaded for making Hindi the official language of the country and criticised the demand made at the convention of public men in Madras on December 22 that English should continue as the official language of the Indian Union. Mr. Desai who was speaking at the Madurai-Ramnad Chamber of Commerce on Sunday last (December 24) said that Hindi was understood by more than 50 per cent of the people in the country while English was understood only by five per cent.
