KATHMANDU: At least 12 persons were killed and scores missing after an overloaded suspension bridge over the Bheri River in Surkhet district collapsed on Tuesday. “There could be over 300 people when the bridge collapsed,” said Anil Pandey, Chief District Office (CDO) of Surkhet. Most of the people fell into the raging river. A few swam to safety and 35 were rescued. Mr. Pandey said the death toll could go up. The cold waters make the chances of survival of those drowned very slim. The bridge was exceptionally crowded since people from the adjoining villages came to celebrate the local religious fair, on the banks of the Bheri river.
