Haryana grapplers shine

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Grapplers from Haryana and Maharashtra hogged the limelight on the second day of the National inter-school championships at the Central stadium here on Tuesday.

Haryana won three out of the four gold medals that was decided in the boys’ sections while its girls won one gold. Mizoram’s Lal Biakdiki broke the dominance of the two states by winning the gold in the girls’ 57kg division.

Host Kerala had a profitable outing with its wrestlers winning a few medals. But Kerala boys lost in both football and volleyball to fall out of the medal race. Tamil Nadu boosted its chances in football with a 4-1 victory over Andaman.

Girls: 30kg: 1. A.T. Mohite (Mah), 2. P. Akhila (Ker), 3. Asha (Har). 37kg: P.D. Shinde (Mah), 2. Shabna Begam (Ori), 3. Annu (Har). 48kg: 1. Kavitha (Har), 2. Tahera Khaton (Ori), 3. S.V. Paul (Mah). 57kg: Lal Biakdiki (Miz), 2. P.C. Jayasree (Ker), 3. Neha Kohad (Mah).

Girls: Maharashtra bt Orissa 25-17, 25-15, 25-13; Haryana bt Andaman 25-11, 25-13, 25-8.

Football: Boys: Orissa 6 bt Andaman 0; Assam 2 bt Kerala 0; Tamil Nadu 4 bt Andaman 1; Mizoram 3 bt Chhattisgarh 1; Maharashtra 0 drew with Chhattisgarh 0.
