NEW DELHI: Timil Patel and Ashraf Makda applied themselves at the right stage to save Gujarat acute embarrassment on the first day of its Ranji Trophy Plate League semifinal match against Madhya Pradesh at the Karnail Singh Stadium here on Tuesday. Timil and Makda added 86 runs for the eighth wicket as Gujarat, put in, struggled against the pace of Sanjay Pandey and spin of Sunil Dholpure. From a precarious 92 for eight, Gujarat hauled itself to a first innings score of 192 on a pitch where stroke-making needed sound judgment. Madhya Pradesh was three for the loss of opener Naman Ojha at stumps. Pandey and seamer Anand Rajan gave Madhya Pradesh reason to justify its decision to bowl first. Crucial strikesOff-spinner Sunil Dholpure exposed the Gujarat middle-order, picking up the vital wickets of Parthiv Patel and Niraj Patel. Timil stood gallantly even as Mohnish Parmar and Amit Singh departed in quick succession. Makda and Timil adopted a cautious approach and grew in confidence and added priceless runs with their sensible approach. Timil remained unbeaten on 71 off 161 balls with ten fours while Makda compiled 40 off 52 balls with four fours and two sixes.
