TOO HOT TO HANDLE: L.N. Prasad Reddy has no clue to this one from Raja Chowdhury.

KOLKATA: The four-pronged Bengal pace attack made full use of the pace, bounce and movement off the pitch to skittle out Andhra for a paltry 121 in the first innings on the first day of the four-day Ranji Trophy Super League Group ‘B’ match at the Eden Gardens here on Tuesday.

Facing an imminent relegation to Plate League if it fails to win this encounter outright, a determined Bengal team ran through the Andhra batting line-up.

Chowdhury excels

Left-arm medium-pacer Rana Chowdhury returned a dream analysis of four for 13 in 6.2 overs in his second first-class game. The 29-year-old all-rounder, more known as a limited overs specialist, made his debut early this season against Baroda which Bengal lost badly. Chowdhury, brought back for this crucial tie and bowling for the first time in Ranji, turned the match around with two vital wickets of opener L.N. Prasad Reddy and captain M.S.K. Prasad in successive overs.

Bengal put Andhra into bat after play began 45 minutes late owing to damp pitch. Shib Sankar Paul and Ranadeb Bose, picked up two early wickets that of opener Hemal Watekar and No. 3 A. Satya Kumar Varma.

After lunch, the Andhra slide began with Chowdhury delivering the double strike.

Bodapati Sumanth scored a breezy 30 (5x4) before Ashok Dinda brought one in to bowl him. At close, Bengal was 46 for the loss of opener Anustup Majumdar.
