Services of Siddhar Swamigal recalled

Centenary arch declared open

KUMBAKONAM: The Parabrahma Sadguru Siddhar Swamigal (Narayanaswamy) Centenary Arch was declared open by Ko.Si. Mani, Minister for Co-operation at Seemanur (Srinivasanallur) near Kumbakonam on Sunday.

Siddhar Swamigal, a renowned saint belonging to a lineage of Siddhars was born at Seemanur (Srinivasanallur) on May 15, 1904. He moved to Parangipettai near Chidambaram and later to Mayiladuthurai, where he attained his final peace on August 31, 1964.

Stamp released

In recognition of his service to humanity, the Department of Posts, Government of India released a commemorative stamp in honour of Siddhar Swamigal on May 15, 2004 at New Delhi.

Now, a centenary arch at the birth-place of Siddhar Swamigal was constructed in his honour by his prime disciple, Swamy Ongaranandha, Head, Ongara Ashramam.

The arch was consecrated in the distinguished presence of S.R. Singaravelu, Judge, Madras High Court.

Justice S.R. Singaravelu, a native of Kumbakonam, said that spiritualism and justice (neethi) were the need of the hour.

We must treat all of mankind equally, he said.

Dr. C. Subramaniam, Vice Chancellor, Tamil University, who was the chief guest, spoke on the philosophy of Siddhars and their tremendous contribution to literature, medicine, philosophy and science.

The function started with the universal prayer sung by the women’s wing of Ongara Ashramam.

Swamy Ongaranandha and S. Ramalingam, Ex MLA welcomed the gathering.

Mr. Murugu Manikkam, Senior Advocate, Mayiladuthurai, Dr. P. Balasubramaniam and Mr. S. Rajagopal, Trustees of Ongara Ashramam, P.R.Umamaheswaran, Vice-President – LucasTVS and Mr. K. Anbalagan, former Kumbakonam panchayat union chairman offered their felicitations.
