Allahabad: The festival of Christmas was celebrated with great fervour and enthusiasm in this city where a social organisation set up a camp providing free treatment to eye patients in keeping with Christ’s message of compassion and charity. Churches across the city remained abuzz with activity as devotees offered prayers, lighted candles and sang hymns in praise of their revered Jesus. In a unique example of composite culture, Hindu saints camping at the holy Sangam took part in Christmas celebrations along with Christian devotees and partook of the delicacies prepared specially on the occasion. Meanwhile, the Rotary club held a camp for the visually challenged who were provided with free medical treatment for their ailments. “The festival is being celebrated in myriad ways across the world. We saw no better way to pay obeisance to Christ the saviour by using our skills to provide relief to the ailing and poor,” Rotary club member and renowned city opthalmologist R.N. Mishra said.
