Haryana Irrigation department asked to ensure water supply

Special Correspondent

Officers directed to carry out intensive patrolling to ensure water up to tails

“Govt’s main priority is to provide facilities to farmers to improve their economic condition”

Storage in all reservoirs on lower side; State can face a water scarcity if winter rains fail

CHANDIGARH: The Haryana Government on Tuesday directed the Irrigation department to ensure supply of water at tails of canals.

Irrigation Minister Ajay Singh Yadav on Tuesday directed all officers of the State Irrigation Department to remain vigilant for ensuring authorised supply of water at tails and to carry out intensive patrolling with the help of the police for ensuring canal water up to the tails.

Mr. Yadav also directed the officers to advise the farmers to use sprinkler sets for optimum use of canal water, especially in the lift irrigation areas in the head reaches so that water could reach the tail end. He said the main priority of the State Government was to provide maximum facilities to the farmers so that their economic condition could improve. Haryana, he added, was receiving surface water from the Yamuna, the Sutlej, the Ravi and the Beas.

Since there was no storage dam on the Yamuna, water was distributed as received. The share of Haryana in the Sutlej, the Ravi and the Beas was received from the Bhakra reservoir through the Bhakra Main Line (BML) and Narwana Branch.

Inflow in Yamuna less

PTI adds: Mr. Yadav informed that the inflow in river Yamuna was quite less and the supplies in W.J.C. Head at HKB as on December 21, 2007 was of the order of 1992 cusecs (including 1059 cusecs for Delhi Jal Board) while inflow in rivers Sutlej, Ravi and Beas were even less than of dry year in flow pattern.

Storage in all the reservoirs was on the lower side as compared to last year and the State could face a water scarcity in the event of failure of winter rains. He said that 1620.40 ft. water level and 2.88 storage in MAF was recorded in Bhakra reservoir as on December 21, 2007 which indicates 21.16 ft. and 0.69 MAF lower side as compared to the corresponding period of last year. Similarly, in Pong reservoir, water level was recorded 1316.54 ft. and storage in MAF was 1.32 on December 21, 2007 which was 48.25 ft. and 2.10 less respectively as compared to the last year, he said adding that 29.47 ft. water level and 0.41 storage in MAF were on the lower side in Ranjit Sagar Dam as compared to the corresponding period of last year.

Keeping in view the situation of availability of surface water from Bhakra reservoir, Haryana has reduced its irrigation requirement from this source to 8150 cusecs (125 cusecs for Nangloi Treatment Plant), the Minister said.
