Officials to visit houses to get details for voters’ list

Staff Correspondent

People told to have names included if found missing

Summary revision of voters’ list being undertaken

Registration in two places will attract punitive action

DAVANGERE: Deputy Commissioner M.B. Dyaberi, who is also the district election officer, has said that the special summary revision of the electorate is currently being undertaken in the district. The exercise is being conducted in three different phases based on the voters’ list of 2007. He asked the people of Davangere to get their names included if found missing.

He said that deletion, addition or any other kind of modifications in the voters’ list could be sought, and officers assigned the task of preparing the final list would come to their doorsteps to ensure correctness in data. No voter could have his name in enrolled in two different places, he said, and added that if anybody were to register his name in duplicate by providing false information, punitive action would be initiated.

Verification

Speaking to presspersons here on Monday, Mr. Dyaberi said that all steps had been taken to prepare the actual electoral list in the district, and hence officials who had been deputed to prepare it had been instructed to verify details of voters. Gram panchayat secretaries and other officials had been asked to convene a special grama sabha meeting where they could announce the list and subsequent modifications. The Deputy Commissioner further said that all recognised political parties had been given a copy of the voters’ list of 2007, and that they too could request for modifications by furnishing details of voters. He said many people had complained that their names were not in the list although they had a voters identity card. Such people could avail themselves of the opportunity to include their names in the list by furnishing requisite details.

Requests

Over 1,500 officials including the Assistant Commissioners, Commissioner of the Davangere City Corporation, and the tahsildars, would be responsible for formulating the list. There were 12,35,538 voters in the district according to the draft rolls of 2007, while 80,000 requests had been received for modifications, Mr. Dyaberi said.

He further said that no government employee who had been assigned the task of preparing the voters list, could abstain from duty for any reason whatsoever, and added that action would be taken against those refusing to attend to summary revision work. Headquarters assistant to the Deputy Commissioner Bettarsurmutt was present.
