BERHAMPUR: A 22-year-old youth allegedly raped and murdered an eight-year-old girl at Dayapalli village under Hinjli police station in Ganjam district on Monday night. The accused person A. Chandreya was arrested at Kukudakhandi village on Tuesday morning. During interrogation, he confessed to the crime, the police said. Also a resident of Dayapalli village, Chandreya was quite close to the family of the victim. “He breached this faith to commit the gruesome act,” said Duryodhan Das, father of the victim. On Monday night, Chandreya approached Mr. Duryodhan and offered to take the girl to a village feast. Without the least suspicion, he allowed his daughter to go with Chandreya. But the girl did not return home even till midnight. When asked, Chandreya claimed that after the feast he had left the child near the village school. The villagers then launched a search and found her body at around 1 a.m. It was evident that she was raped and then killed. On information, a police team from Hinjli reached village and sent the body for a post-mortem examination. Later, they found Chandreya hiding near a temple at Kukudakhandi.
