Kandhamal communal flare-up likely to impact BJD rally

Party top brass expecting a huge gathering

BJD to celebrate 10th foundation day

Naveen Patnaik to address the rally

BHUBANESWAR: Though leaders of the ruling Biju Janata Dal are expecting some three lakh people at the party rally here on Wednesday, the communal flare-up in Kandhamal district is likely to cast its shadow over the meeting.

Chief Minister and BJD president Naveen Patnaik is scheduled to address the rally being held to mark the 10th foundation day of the regional political outfit.

The killing of one person, the attack on three churches and burning of government vehicles in Kandhamal on Tuesday is likely to impact the rally.

Violence

The situation took a violent turn following an attack on a VHP leader in the district on Monday. Several opposition parties already blamed the BJD-BJP Government for its “failure to tackle the situation in Kandhamal.”

Further, the rally is likely to attract fewer crowds from Kandhamal as the house of senior party leader and Steel and Mines Minister Padmanabha Behera was attacked by the agitating Kui Samaj supporters in the district.

The BJD top brass, however, is confident that the rally will be a huge success as thousands of people from different parts of the State have started reaching the city.

All care has been taken to make the rally a success as the BJD is dreaming of a third term whenever the polls are held.

Almost all Ministers, legislators and prominent leaders have been given the responsibility to bring people from their respective constituencies and districts to make the rally a success.

As the mineral-based industrialisation is facing stiff opposition in several parts of the State, the Chief Minister is expected to refer to the various schemes the government is implementing for the uplift and welfare of farmers and other backward sections of society.
