Patna: Rebel JD(U) leader and Rajya Sabha member Bashishtha Narayan Singh has embarked on a campaign in support of the rival RJD nominee Ashok Kumar in the December 29 by-poll to the Bikramganj Lok Sabha constituency accusing Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar of “neglecting” entire Shahabad region, including Bikramganj. This parliamentary constituency, straddling naxalite-hit Rohtas and part of Bhojpur districts is witnessing a keen electoral contest between Bihar’s arch political rivals -- ruling JD (U) and chief opposition RJD as it goes to by-poll on December 29. The by-election to the seat has been necessitated by the death in an accident of sitting JD (U) MP and chairman of Nafed Ajit Kumar Singh in August this year. Mr. Singh, who earlier represented Bikraganj in the Lok Sabha, was among the founder members of the Samata Party in early 1990s which was later rechristened as JD (U) led by George Fernandes. Mr. Singh alleged that the Nitish Kumar government had neglected the entire Shahabad region “and it is perhaps for the first time that Shahabad has gone unrepresented for over two years in the State cabinet.”The rebel JD (U) leader asserted that he would be campaigning for the RJD in Bikramganj as Railway Minister Lalu Prasad had requested him. — PTI
