Demand to extend Assembly session

Staff Reporter

Chief Minister charged with not taking problems of the Capital seriously

NEW DELHI: The leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, Jagdish Mukhi, has demanded that the winter session of the Assembly be extended by ten days.

In a statement on Tuesday, Prof. Mukhi also said the Chief Minister’s comment that the Opposition did not have any topics to discuss and was not interested in discussions was baseless. “We have asked for a discussion on corruption in the scheme for preparing new BPL (Below Poverty Line) cards. We also want to discuss the law and order situation in the Capital and why the crime rate has increased,” he said.

Prof. Mukhi charged that it was the Chief Minister who was not taking problems seriously and had called the House only for three days.

“Discussions have been allowed only on two issues -- unauthorised colonies and electricity. However, there are several other issues that need to be sorted out such as the state of the public transport system, cleanliness of the Yamuna and safety of women in the Capital,” he added.

The senior BJP leader said the liberalised liquor policy for the Capital -- that allowed liquor to be served round the clock -- was also a crucial issue that his party wanted to discuss in the House. Other issues that required intervention, he said, included imposition of sex education on students and providing potable water to a majority of the Capital’s residents.
