Complaint against long power cuts in the Capital

Staff Reporter

RWAs have written to Power Minister

‘This adversely affects students who are preparing for examinations’

NEW DELHI: A group of residents’ welfare associations in the Capital have written to Power Minister A. K. Walia complaining about “unannounced and long power cuts”.

The RWAs under the banner of United Residents’ Joint Association (URJA) have in their letter stated that these unscheduled power cuts make it difficult for students to prepare for their upcoming examinations.

They complained that the duration of power cuts in their area lasts from three to four hours.

“Most of the areas in Delhi, particularly those under the distribution company BSES, have to face long power cuts ranging between three and five hours particularly during evenings and mornings. This adversely affects our children who are preparing for their examinations,” said Raj Kumar Dimri of the Mayur Vihar Phase III Residents’ Welfare Association.

Apart from prolonged power cuts, the residents are also irked by the voltage, which they say is not sufficient to even recharge their power back-up appliances.

“The power cuts are so long that even the stand-by arrangements fail. The power cuts affect our studies and power companies should not resort to cuts during examinations,” said Disha Bhatia, a student of Hans Raj College. The residents of Priya Enclave in East Delhi have drawn the attention of the Minister to poor street-lights, inaccurate power bills and a poor grievances mechanism.

Street-lights

The RWA vice-president, Rajiv Setia, said most of the street-lights in Priya Enclave are non-functional and repeated reminders have borne no fruit.
