TAMBARAM: A total of 27 municipalities in the Chengalpattu region have sought Rs. 21 crore from the State Government to carry out repair works on roads and storm water drains that were damaged in the recent rains. The amount proposed by these 27 urban local bodies coming under the Chengalpattu region of the Department of Municipal Administration and Water Supply are only rough estimates and the amount released by the government might be lesser. While Kathivakkam Municipality has sought Rs. 21 lakh for undertaking repairs to roads, storm water drains and minor bridges (culverts), Ambattur Municipality has sought Rs. 1.8 crore, officials of the Department said. Other Municipalities such as Avadi have sought over Rs. 1 crore. Tambaram, Maraimalai Nagar, Alandur and Pallavaram Municipalities, too, have prepared estimates for around Rs. 90 lakh. Officials said following heavy rain last week, many roads were battered and storm water drains left damaged and hence the State Government had asked all Municipalities to prepare a report and the estimated amount required to carry out repair works. Of the Rs. 21 crore estimate prepared by the 27 municipalities, Rs. 14.37 crore is for road repair works, Rs. 4.19 crore for storm water drains and Rs. 2.38 crore for minor bridges. Officials said only the severely damaged stretches on important roads were selected. If all the potholed roads were to be selected, each Municipality would require sums several times more than the estimates prepared now, officials said, adding that concrete roads were excluded from the list of damaged roads.
