Coimbatore: Special teams of the Coimbatore city police have nabbed an 11-member gang from Bihar that stole computers and mobile phones from showrooms across the State. The police said on Tuesday that interrogation revealed that the gang had been targeting showrooms in the neighbouring States for the last two to three years. The arrested were a part of a 42-member gang that had come to Tamil Nadu. While the 11 arrested operated across Coimbatore, the others were suspected to be spread across other districts in the State. In the wee hours of Tuesday, three of the gang members were nabbed when they attempted to break open a phone showroom at Gandhipuram after threatening the watchman with a knife. Following a tip-off, the police rushed to the spot and arrested them. Based on the information provided by them, a special police team stormed a lodge near the railway station and took into custody the remaining eight members. Investigation revealed that the gang was led by Kamal Prasad of Bhagawanpur in Champaran East District. The police recovered 11 knives and 30 high-end model mobile phones worth over Rs.1 lakh. The gang was reportedly involved in such cases in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. After burgling showrooms, some of the gang members would leave for Bihar to dispose of the booty. According to sources, five gang members were arrested in Tuticorin while two others were secured in Erode.
