Water supply hit due to Metro mishap

Staff Reporter

“Repair work is under way”

NEW DELHI: Water supply will be affected in many parts of the Capital on Wednesday because of an accidental damage caused to a major water pipeline of the Delhi Jal Board by the Delhi Metro on Tuesday morning.

According to a Del Jal Board official, the areas that are unlikely to receive any water on Wednesday include Greater Kailash I, Kailash Colony, East of Kailash, Garhi, Panchsheel Park, Panchsheel Enclave, Gulmohar Park, Gulmohar Enclave, Shahpur Jat, parts of Hauz Khas, Uday Park, Masjid Moth Village, Ayurvigyan Nagar and South Extension II.

In addition to these areas, water supply will also be affected in Dakshinpuri, Sheikh Sarai, Sadiq Nagar,Chiragh Dilli, Said-ul-Jab, Neb Sarai and parts of Vasant Kunj.

A Jal Board official said: “Though repair work is already under way, we will be able to restore normal water supply only after 24 hours.”

The incident took place when Delhi Metro was engaged in underground work for utility diversion on the Central Secretariat-Badarpur line below the Defence Colony flyover towards Moolchand. The Kailash main line of the Jal Board was damaged.

DMRC spokesperson Anuj Dayal said: “Since a major 1,000 mm water line has been damaged, we are trying to minimise the inconvenience caused to people.”

Not squarely blaming the DMRC for the damage, a Jal Board official said: “The incident was an unfortunate mishap. Such incidents do happen when infrastructure is not laid out simultaneously resulting in overlap of infrastructure systems.”
