A people sidelined
Staff Reporter
Bangalore: The Nari Kurava tribal community are categorised as Other Backward Classes.
They have been “considered a nuisance” and were ostracised from the main Mahabalipuram, staying on an allotted settlement on the fringes of the town in a place called Poonjeri, cutting them off from the rest of the population.
They have no fixed or real occupation; they sell beads to tourists and shoot birds and other animals for food. Earlier, they used to supply metal nets for the fishermen of Mahabalipuram, but now with the advent of nylon nets, they have lost their livelihood.
