Land identified for shifting Kurlageri village

Staff Correspondent

Governor’s adviser visits villages prone to flooding

GADAG: The Gadag district administration has identified 20 acre land near Kurlageri village of Nargund taluk in the district for permanently shifting the village which is prone to floods during rainy season.

After a visit to the flood-affected villages in Gadag and Dharwad districts on Wednesday, one of the advisers to the Governor, P.P. Prabhu, told presspersons that the move required consent from the owner of the land and a unanimous decision in the “grama sabha” by the villagers.

He said that in the wake of complaints regarding “favouritism” while distributing compensation to people belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in the village, the Nargund tahsildar had been directed to take remedial measures.

Mr. Prabhu said that demand of the residents of Aratti village in Navalgund taluk to shift their village would be looked into.

Later, he visited Menasigi village in Ron taluk where the floods had caused extensive damage. The villagers urged Mr. Prabhu to shift their village permanently.

S.M. Jamdar, Principal Secretary, Revenue Department, who accompanied Mr. Prabhu, clarified that the financial assistance extended to affected families for house collapse and crop loss was only an assistance given on humanitarian ground. “It should not be compared with the compensation given to land owners during land acquisitions,” he said.

Mr. Prabhu was accompanied by Deputy Commissioner Mohammed Mohsin and Chief Executive Officer of Gadag Zilla Panchayat B.F. Patil.

Former MLA B.R. Yavagal and Janata Dal (Secular) leader B.V. Somapur submitted memoranda to Mr. Prabhu seeking proper rehabilitation for the displaced people.
