Filariasis: drugs to be distributed today

Krishnagiri: The Department of Health will carry out a drive to to administer Di-ethyl Carbamazine and albendazole tablets on Thursday as part of its efforts to eliminate filariasis from the district.
The drive would be conducted in Bargur, Jegadevi, Oppadavadi, Mittapalli, Mallapadi, A. Nagamangalam and Karapatti, Collector Santhosh Babu has said.
Health workers and volunteers would distribute the drugs to every household in the area and would follow-up in the next two days to cover left out persons.
The drug should be taken only after food. Pregnant women, children below 2 years and people above 60 years should not consume them, according to World Health Organization. Administration of albendzole would bring down microfilarial level and remove intestinal worms, which cause filariasis. Mobile medical teams would monitor the implementation of the drive in the villages, Mr. Babu added.
