Storage position sufficient to cater to farmers’ requirement

POLLACHI: Water is likely to be released on December 30 for irrigation of first zone ayacuts under the Parambikulam Aliyar Project (PAP) of Public Works Department.
According to R. Manickam, superintending engineer of the PAP, a proposal has been sent to the Government after consultation with heads of Water Users’ Associations here.
He expressed hope that an order would be received shortly in this regard.
Cultivation
With the release of water, cultivation would be taken up on nearly one lakh acres in Udumalpet, Pollachi, Palladam and Tirupur taluks of Coimbatore district and Vellakovil, Dharapuram and Kangeyam taluks of neighbouring Erode district after a gap of two years.
Mr. Manickam said that the storage position in the group of dams under the PAP was sufficient to cater to the requirement of farmers.
The recent rain had improved the storage marginally at Sholayar Dam and Parambikulam reservoir.
The farmers would get water for a total of 90 days in six wettings in a span of 135 days.
Mr. Manickam said that they had extended the release of water by three more days for third zone ayacuts following the request by maize growers.
