Schools to be evaluated

Special Correspondent

Bangalore: The annual quality assessment drive of government and aided schools by the Karnataka School Quality Assessment Organisation is scheduled to take off in two phases from January 3.

The massive programme will cover 17,39,044 lakh children of Class V and VII in 47,819 schools across the State and evaluate the quality of education imparted in their schools on the basis of their performance. The first phase of the test will be held on January 3, 5 and 7 and the second phase on January 16, 17 and 18. Kannada, Urdu, Marathi, Tamil and Telugu schools will be covered and children tested through oral, written and activity-based tests.

According to Chandriah S.R., Project Officer of the organisation, evaluation of the tests will begin on January 28. Close to 50,000 people will be roped in for evaluation. Of these, 50 per cent will be teachers and the others students of D. Ed. colleges.

“This is to ensure that adequate number of teachers stay in classes,” said Mr. Chandriah.

This is the third evaluation being done by the organisation since its inception in 2005-2006. The survey will assess whether the policy intervention measures taken after the first and second assessment have obtained the desired results. As per the evaluation last year, quality of schools was the best in Uttara Kannada district and the lowest in Chamarajnagar district. A 12.5 per cent improvement in quality of education was noted between the first and the second evaluation, according to Mr. Chandriah.

Resource persons and evaluators have been trained for this massive exercise and booklets distributed which contain information on the procedure involved in conducting the test and evaluation.
