SABARIMALA: Special Officer appointed by the government K. Jayakumar has said steps have been taken to ensure five-lakh cans of ‘aravana’ (250 ml each) by December 30 afternoon when the Ayyappa Temple opens for Makaravilakku festival. Talking to The Hindu, Mr. Jayakumar said, but for the shortage of eco-friendly ‘aravana’ cans, things at Sabarimala were under control even at a time when the holy hillock witnessed heavy influx of pilgrims during the last lap of the 41-day Mandalam festival. Mr. Jayakumar said the ‘aravana’ distribution would be streamlined further and the regulation in its sales would be relaxed to eight cans per person from December 30 in the larger interests of the pilgrims. He said the prevailing system of supplying ‘aravana’ in vessels brought by the devotees through an additional counter would continue during the Makaravilakku festival too. He said the system was beneficial to those who go for bulk purchase of the ‘prasadom’ as the sales had been regulated to a maximum limit of five litres per person.
