HYDERABAD: The murder of two Telugu students on Louisiana State University’s campus last week caught the international attention but the dreadful incident seems to have little impact on the students planning to pursue higher studies in the US though parents sound little bit apprehensive. “Such incidents can happen anywhere and it has no effect on my decision to study in the USA,” says G. Ramya, a student of Indu College of Engineering. Her friend Divya Teja of Arora College of Engineering too agrees with her. “These are isolated incidents and they don’t indicate that the situation in the entire US is bad,” she says adding that she is firm on her decision to pursue higher studies in the USA. For a prospective international student US is not just a place of opportunities but there is a perception of it being not a very safe country. But the value of a degree from the United States perhaps overpowers all those negatives. Despite the wide media coverage the incidents at LSU got, Archana, a popular television anchor still wants to go there. She got admission at the LSU in Computer Science. “Gun culture is prevalent in the US. We have to take some safety measures and concentrate on studies,” says the host of Dance Baby Dance show on the Gemini channel. Agrees Rajender Reddy, a teacher, “Such important decisions of life are not be decided by incidents like the one in LSU. Consultants dealing with foreign education that such incidents bother students little.
