AIDWA seeks house sites for single women

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: Members of the Hyderabad City Committee of the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) on Wednesday demanded house sites and exclusive white ration cards for single women, who are the sole bread-winners in a family. The members also demanded that adequate job opportunities for children of such women be created for their uplift.

Addressing mediapersons, the members said that they had conducted a survey on single women in twin cities deserted by their husbands to fend for themselves. The members said that single women, earning anywhere from Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 20,000 a year, had limited avenues to support their dependants.

“Ninety per cent of single women suffer as their husbands are addicted to alcohol and drugs. It is the responsibility of the [Andhra Pradesh] government to provide help like ration cards, scholarships for children etc,” said AIDWA Hyderabad City committee vice-president C. Aruna.
