Letters to the Editor
Narendra Modi no doubt won against heavy odds but to call his re-election “historic” is reading too much into the Gujarat election results. After all, many Chief Ministers have been re-elected on the development plank and on the strength of their leadership qualities . To expect Brand Modi to work elsewhere is asking for too much. For instance, Mayawati’s BSP, after the successful “social engineering” in Uttar Pradesh, failed to win a single seat in the Gujarat election. Each State is unique and no uniform election strategy can be relied upon. D.B.N. Murthy, Bangalore After the Gujarat election results were declared, some readers wrote saying that the Godhra incident and related issues should be put behind. Will the same readers have this opinion about all the offences and crimes committed in our country? I would also like to know what their response will be if those behind the Mumbai blasts are allowed to go scot-free. Elizabeth Varghese, Kochi In rural Gujarat, Mr. Modi concentrated on issues such as roads, building check dams, and laying emphasis on Bt cotton. The Congress only harped on Mr. Modi’s secular credentials. People did not relish the Congress comments and chose to vote for the development plank of Mr. Modi. R. Narayanan, Chennai Congress president Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul may have realised by now that huge crowds at election rallies and the predictions of the exit polls do not always translate into a victory at the ballot box.
