Letters to the Editor
This refers to the news report, ‘Curfew in Orissa towns after violence’ (Dec. 26). The attack on churches in Kandhamal district of Orissa speaks of a deeper conspiracy by communal forces in spreading hatred. The secular forces led by the Congress are groping in the dark after a defeat in Gujarat and, of course, they are more confused than ever in choosing the best strategy to tackle such tendencies. Communalism is a monster with a clear-cut ideology and it cannot be fought on electoral platforms. It is time secular forces grasped this reality. Divakar N., Mysore It is most unfortunate that incidents of arson and violence — with mobs targeting the places of worship of Christians — that began on Monday continued on Christmas day. The incidents were apparently triggered by the attack on a VHP leader, who held an anti-conversion movement in Kandhamal district in Orissa. In a secular state where everyone is free to follow his or her religion, the VHP leader should not have led the movement on the day of Christmas to show his protest towards conversion. R. Murali Kumar, Srirangam
